Ever feel like something about you is incapable of changing? Like there is something in you that you can’t quite put your finger on that is this sense of yourself that cannot be felt but follows you everywhere? Like you have this resonance inside you that is hard to pin down but has always been part of who you are?

Perhaps you always feel like your body doesn’t fit who you are. Perhaps you have anger or depression that just stays in you as a low key emotion you can’t quite access all the way. Maybe you feel lost or that you can’t reach a potential you can feel inside you no matter how hard you try. You may have tried to do self work or even emotional release, yet there is still something getting in your way that you cannot access. It’s difficult to understand logically. Something about you doesn’t really have a reason to be in you and you cannot find a story behind what you feel or this sense of who you are. Perhaps you are being haunted by your ancestors.

The haunting represents something that you can’t quite put your finger on but deeply affects you every day of your life. The ghostly nature of my content today makes it hard to write about. I am going to do my best to explain, but feel free to ask me questions in the comments section around how this etheric concept affects you.

Not all of us have obvious ancestral trauma to heal. If you can trace your reactions and way of being to concrete stories in your own life, then you are lucky enough to potentially be spared the need to address your ancestral trauma…for now. If you know for sure that your family did suffer trauma, you may want to enter into an intention to heal ancestry without the unformed sense of something being wrong. There is work to do in any family whose trauma goes back three generations or more.

To do ancestral trauma work, it has to resonate in you. Depending on your history, you may or may not have as much ancestral trauma. Anyone whose ancestry has had trauma in their family story has the potential to engage in ancestral trauma healing. Anyone who has secrets in their family story has a need for ancestral trauma inquiry. Previous generations who experienced war, famine, disease, loss, abuse, addiction, depression, dissatisfaction, anxiety, stress, loneliness all can point towards a need to process ancestral trauma.

When our own reactions to life are not situational but compulsive, there is an unconscious trauma that is asking to be brought into the light.

Haunting Explained

We need to look back three generations for the origins of the specific ancestral trauma in us that is ready to be healed. We can look back further in time, but we cannot look closer. This is because trauma that causes an ancestral trauma response is too potent to work with until the trauma has lost its intensity. Only after three generations can we feel the effects of the ancestral trauma, process the haunting, and make different choices than our ancestor.

It is impossible to process trauma in the midst of it. In horrendous situations, it is necessary to cut off in order to survive. A partition has to develop to stay sane or functional. There is no way a person can carry on and survive in the midst of the unexperience-able. This necessary shut down is what becomes a compulsive expression in generations to come. It comes from our ancestor deciding something about their own lives as a limiting belief. They haunt us with their decision. This haunting cuts us off from who we want to be.

When the ancestor puts their limiting belief on us in an attempt to help us, their limiting belief asks future generations to be ware of what has the potential to cause trauma. They send their ancestral haunting as a desire to help future generations. What is hard to realize is that ancestral help often causes suffering in future generations. Our world is more insulated and easier to survive than our ancestors.  We have more choice, more resources, and tools to process the suffering. Giving the ancestor permission to let go and move on is mutually beneficial. Our ancestor needs us to undo their haunting just as much as our lives need us to find our way back to ourselves.

While the ancestor’s message is often sent as an attempt to prevent future suffering, this is not always the case. Some ancestors have a lot of negativity in them. Ancestral haunting can be a curse. More malice oriented ancestors may want you to keep negative emotions alive inside you. Only through inquiry can the intent, positive or negative, behind the haunting be discovered.

Haunting Tip: Think about something that is happening in the world right now that bothers you. Find something you cannot fathom the suffering that is occurring. I get triggered by refugees. Another person may feel the same about war or environmental tragedy. The interest you have with other people’s suffering can show you the path to the message of your own unconscious trauma. Part of what is being triggered can be your own transgenerational trauma.

The initial query into your life to find how the trauma is still resonating in you and asking for your own healing path to develop is an inquiry into resonance. You are looking more for a sense of something that is hard to access than a concrete experience. Perhaps there is a sense of alienation, separateness, clumsiness, or inability to care. Maybe you have a disconnect that is consistent in every single relationship you have. To enter into the realm of not quite right but can’t put a pin on why is the place to feel into ancestral trauma. This sensation will begin to form questions inside you. The questions are the beginning of finding the ghost within.

Compiled Trauma

Going back three generations means it is more possible for us to get the story behind the trauma. The story can create a merging of your life with the life of your ancestor. It is possible to see patterns and understand more deeply how your own life is directly being affected by the trauma of your ancestor. Some of us have more ancestral trauma than others or a greater sense of not quite right in ourself but not sure why. This may be because of compiling trauma.

However, most of our ancestors 3 generations ago did not have the time to process their own ancestral trauma. A lot of times in my own practice with this work I see a compiling of trauma. An ancestor from 5 or 6 or 7 generations is also still working through your current life. The limiting beliefs compile. What is learned by one ancestor becomes another ancestor’s way of being which informs how they then coped with trauma and tried to avoid it through limiting beliefs about reality.  If you sense that you have a lot of limiting beliefs that you can’t understand, it may be a result of compiling trauma.

For those of you who want to take advantage of Halloween, Samhain, All Soul’s…read on. This is the time of year to talk to your ancestor, question them, and get clarity on how you can move forward in your life without their trauma. There is no correct time to do ancestral trauma healing work. Yet this is the time of the year where the veil is thin and ancestors are more available.

I love supporting people to live their unique lives. I hope my writing is helping you do that today.
