We all need tools to effortlessly bring us into relaxation and alignment. It is too easy to live our lives through the mirror of our stress and our problems. It can also be too simple to avoid our issues through positive thoughts that ignore the negative in a way that suppresses instead of releases. The practice of finding ways to unwind that connect soul and heart into an interconnected reality is one of the most potent ways we can remember all that we are. This connection can give us purpose and hope in a world that makes it too easy to forget we are here for a reason.

I believe that your Soul Mantra is waiting for you. Set an intention. Open the door. It will come to you. It’s right here. Waiting. Wanting you.

The Soul Mantra is meant to be a statement that is 100% unique to you. You need to find it, use it, and allow it to flow through out your being. When life gets overwhelming, having a Soul Mantra at hand to connect to and align with leads to doors opening into life.

A Soul Mantra allows life to teach us the way forward or through the difficulties we face.

When it comes down to it, we all deserve a Soul Mantra. We deserve a space in life that grounds us, calls us into our bodies, and opens us to flowing even in the most difficult aspects of our life.

Finding and creating your own Soul Mantra is going to take a little bit of work. I’m sorry. This is just the way life is a lot of the time. We have to work a little to gain a lot. When you find your Soul Mantra, you will have a cornerstone to your own healing process that will guide you and lead you into the life you desire. A Soul Mantra is about mental well being and physical connection. I am offering you the opportunity to discover a path to the beauty that is you and your life.

Key Components to Your Soul Mantra

1. Align With The Complete Version of You.

There is an opportunity in self understanding to hold what you know about yourself and all of your struggles as a snapshot of your true being. Consider yourself with a sense of a widened lens in which you take a moment to fully see all of yourself without judgement or attachment. Somehow the black and white of you combines to be a whole picture of self. With that full picture, you have the power to feel self without judgement.

I really, really need to stress the without judgement piece as the key to aligning with the complete version of you. We tend to get tunnel vision when we get caught up in the self.

The perspective needed to bring in the complete version of you sees a theme behind your struggles in life. It answers the question: What connects everything you feel, think, and see to you being you?

Let’s contemplate an obvious hurdle many of us have towards aligning with the complete version of self. What happens if you can’t let go of self judgement? In my Journaling Exercises I will be more specific on questions to ask yourself to get clarity around this hurdle. For this component of the Soul Mantra, I recommend spending time in self reflection throughout today feeling into what self judgements turn you into and how that is different than who you want to be.

All of your life brings you into who you are. This means that your own unique way of seeing the world, being with the world, defending against the world, and loving the world makes you uniquely you. Experiencing the good, bad, and in between of reality leads you to the good, bad, and in between of being you. No one is perfect. No one has life figured out. We are all just struggling to be ourselves in a perfectly imperfect way. The more this truth is embraced instead of fought, the more freedom is created to accept that the complete version of you is a necessity.

Negativity is an invitation to find the light that is inside you, your soul. It’s a pathway into you. Self acceptance and getting clear on your struggles go together. Defenses are sacred gateways into your own most cherished self.  You need defenses to figure out who you really are. Without blocks, you cannot know what alignment feels like. Without an ability to block, resist, fight, or dismiss certain aspects of life, choice would not exist. The negative lights the way towards the positive. Defense and negativity are required to awaken the soul.

Try to take a moment to really see yourself as you are. Part of your Soul Mantra needs to honor the negative inside you as a sacred pathway to your own light. Allow “I am” to be a foundation that opens doors instead of closing them.

Start with the self. Let your biggest struggle be the beginning. It is time to find the complete self within your Soul Mantra. What in you creates a desire to thrive and be alive?

Some phrases to try out are:

  • “I am.” - if you struggle with knowing who you are.

  • “I belong.” - if you struggle with connecting and fitting in.

  • “I can.” - if you struggle with procrastination.

  • “I accept.” - if you resist a lot.

  • “I’m okay.” - if you feel like there’s something wrong with you.

2.  A Willingness to Accept Mystery.

Mystery is a part of EVERYTHING. Connecting to mystery for many people means having a relationship to the divine. For others there is an understanding of spirituality. I write a lot about the unknown as mystery. Interconnectedness, faith, connection, spirit, god(s)/goddess(es), and the universe are other ways to describe this mystery of reality that is bigger than the imagination and more connected than it is possible to feel.

Mystery is not faith or dogma. Mystery cannot be defined or named. Because both faith and dogma are explanations of mystery, the mystery within the mystery is not present. For the purposes of my writing today, think about the vast mystery that our little human brains cannot fathom.

The willingness to accept mystery is a holding place within the Soul Mantra for the meaning of life. There are some key components to mystery that are really important. We need to have a choice to believe, a belief system that is unique to the self and no one else, and an understanding that absolutely everything has mystery infused within it. In all darkness there is a light and darkness exists to find light. Without the component of mystery, there is no perspective, connection, or trust. Mystery is hope. Mystery creates purpose.

Trusting in the mysterious process of life can be really difficult when it is so easy to get caught up in all that is "wrong" about our reality. We can get really worried about the climate, elections, wars, health crises, social injustices. Yet nothing will change unless we see that the bigger picture is one of connection, light, and love. The energy we create goes towards the negative when we cannot ground into a sense of mystery and meaning.

Trust and surrender are intrinsic to letting go into flow. Without a willingness to engage in a relationship to mystery, there is nothing to flow into. An understanding of inner authority coupled with an ability to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy outer authority allows trust and surrender into mystery to happen naturally.

Trust and surrender as states of being inevitably happen in life. If we cannot willingly accept mystery, trust and surrender are forced upon us. Think of childbirth as an example. The sort of letting go and flow that happens when there is overwhelm coupled with a complete sense of no control is one of the only times the rapture of total trust and surrender is tapped into as inevitable.

A willingness to accept mystery invites us to flow into what is bigger than us without bothering to fight. This is normally pushed on us instead of sought out. When mystery invites us to seek surrender and trust and listen, we can find connection and inter connection everywhere. We become part of life and trust it. Mystery is reality.

A Soul Mantra needs a connection to a word of mystery. Mystery holds power and allows for an alignment with all of reality, not just your own.

Build your perspective of mystery into your Soul Mantra. What connects you to mystery? What concept feels most aligned with your view of mystery - love, compassion, light, connection? Consider words such as unknown, divine, teacher, learning, lessons, spirit, aligned, surrender, universe, and trust in your Soul Mantra. Find the word that speaks to you the most in relation to your own ability to connect to the interconnecting nature of mystery.

3.  Acknowledging Heart and Soul.

Accepting mystery eventually needs to turn inward toward that equally mysterious connection between mystery and self. Acknowledging the existence of our heart and soul connects the self as mystery.

Inside all of us is a light that has never been broken. The heart of us knows this as truth. All that is needed is a simple acknowledgement. Every person’s heart and soul are integral to the existence of the universe. We all play a part. We are all necessary.

In the unrelenting intensity of the reality we all live, remembering to look for what's right, what's good, what's unique, and what's perfect in us too easily gets put to the side. It is way too alluring to get obsessed with the negative and forget that positive relationships to everything we struggle with are right behind the negativity that is obvious.

To find the necessary hope and belief system in our being that creates the ability to trust and surrender, heart and soul cannot be forgotten.

Fear and despair curb the ability to flow. Control dependency is a sign of distrust that inhibits surrender. These aspects of our self need the balance of acknowledging heart and soul to discover connection.

The path to finding the true self is most obvious when the ego is fighting the hardest. This means when the voices of failure, despair, and fear get loud, life is asking us to let go. Acknowledging heart and soul creates purpose. A need develops to express, connect, and share our self with others. Heart and soul are intertwined with purpose and connection. We need to let go into who we are, not rigidly hold onto an idea of self. Getting too caught up in our blocks, defenses, negativity and shadow without the balance of settling into our heart and soul results in fighting life. Acknowledging heart and soul creates the trust needed to flow with life.

Acknowledging heart and soul eventually leads to a surrender to our inner authority, our inner unknown self, and our inner divine. This is really important for discovering purpose. If we can cultivate either an outward or an inward relationship to these qualities - balancing authority, unknown, and the divine - the relationship we cultivate to each will interrelate to the other. Really exploring the self to find the soul and heart of us eventually leads to an acceptance of mystery. Going outwards to accept mystery while concurrently connecting inward to acknowledge heart and soul is interconnected flow.

As long as we are seeking, we will find the connection we need for our Soul Mantra.

Do words such as everything, connection, belonging, interconnection, community, purpose, love, light resonate?  You need to have space in the words that define how your heart and soul have permission to exist in you. They cannot be bigger than you or not include you because that is not acknowledging the you that needs to light the way into flow. Finding a word that somehow puts your heart and soul into the vastness of mystery and ever evolving self is key to creating a Soul Mantra that flows.

4. Ability to Accept Change.

The reality is that a Soul Mantra that lands, grounds, and creates flow also will eventually transform the self. This means that the mantra itself may need to change over time. If the mantra starts to create a dissonance or tension, it is time to recreate it. Honestly, if the Soul Mantra is used regularly to soothe emotional responses and support releases and flow, it will change on its own, naturally, without your input.

Realistically we all go through periods of disconnect. In those periods it is natural to lose your connection to your Soul Mantra. In this case it might be important to go back to the beginning and identify the self that is struggling and connect it to once again to mystery, heart, and soul. The Soul Mantra is not going to change drastically over time. It just may need slight shifts that resonate with your own changes in perspective.

When the words that come to you are intuitive or from dream states, they are the right words. Let the conscious mind go to allow for less struggle. Search with an open listening. This can be done through meditation but also in the midst of situations that cause you to disconnect from the life you want.

I believe that your Soul Mantra is waiting for you. Set an intention. Open the door. It will come. It’s right there. Waiting for you.
